Wharton Views a Vidtel

Tools

Up until a couple of weeks ago, Scott Wharton was the long-time (1999-2008) VP of Marketing at BroadSoft. Telecom analyst and in-the-know blogger Jon Arnold says Scott has departed BroadSoft and Maryland to relocate to Silicon Valley and start up Vidtel, a consumer play focused on video calling.

The Vidtel website is currently a placeholder. A bit more information can be gleaned from Wharton’s LinkedIn profile. Scott is the Founder and CEO of Vidtel. Vidtel is a service provider offering video calling to consumers. Vidtel's mission is to make video calling as easy as making a phone call and build the world's largest network of video telephony users.

Arnold thinks home video calling might have some legs, since the technology is ready, handsets are cheap, broadband mainstream, and mobile video starting to happen. Wireline telco providers might love the idea because video calling can “make landlines sexy again,” but that message could be equally applicable to the cable guys.
