Truveo Challenge Yields Exciting Video Apps
TopCoder Inc. has announced the winners of its Truveo Developer Challenge, in which developers competed to create useful video search applications using Truveo's open source API. The nine top entries, awarded $10,000 each, included a sports video search app, a localized video search app and a 3D elliptical orbit display for video search results.
The contest entries utilized Truveo's index of more than 200 million online videos and yielded 93 new applications. Entries were evaluated in five categories: download and usage statistics; innovation; best use of the Truveo API and functionality; Truveo favorites; and popularity in peer reviews from the global TopCoder community.
Highlights include:
- Map of Video: Indexes videos based on upload location. Using a combination of Google Map and Truveo technologies, the app highlights recent online video posts, and then, once a location is selected, allows users to browse all videos uploaded from that location by a host of categories, including most viewed, most recent and most relevant. Truveo allows the site to update consistently, and the map function allows users to focus easily on specific regions.
- VeoSearch: An extension of the Firefox browser, the app enables users to highlight any keyword in the text of a site, and initiate a search for related videos from the right-click menu. Search results appear in a pop-up window for browsing.
- Sporty: Just in time for the Olympics, Sporty offers categorized online videos of all competition disciplines. The site also includes video catalogs of the three major U.S. professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA), categorized by team.
