Time Warner Cable drops metered broadband use plan -- for now

Tools

Breathe easy online video junkies. Time Warner Cable has scraped its plans to extend its tiered metered pricing plans for broadband Internet connections. The cableco's plan to charge up to $150 a month for heavy Internet usage was met with fierce resistance from consumers and even prompted New York Rep. Eric Massa to draft a bill that would make the practice illegal.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glen Britt said the company would discontinue the trials until it can educate consumers about the merits of the plan. The company said it will roll out online usage meters to demonstrate that only a small percentage of users would be affected under the plan. Consumer advocates worried a successful launch of Time Warner Cable's program would prompt all ISPs to inflict similar pricing plans, ultimately costing the average Internet user more.
