thisMoment launches video sharing site, raises $3.5M

thisMoment, a start-up video and photo sharing site, officially launched Tuesday and reported raising a total of $3.5 million from founder and CEO Vince Broady and a collection of other digital media veterans. thisMoment aims to integrate all forms of digital media, including online video, blogging and social networking, to let users share "moments" from their life in multiple formats. The service also allows for users to easily share their moments through other social networking sites like Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube.

"thisMoment moves beyond simply storing media, sending friend requests and broadcasting status updates," Broady said in the launch announcement. "We're offering something ultimately more meaningful by giving people a way to capture the context and emotion of their life experiences. In doing so, we're helping users create an enduring digital reflection of their lives."

The site is currently monetizing through licensing its platform, both to traditional media sites, such as Time Inc. and The New York Times, which use thisMoment to illustrate text stories with multimedia elements to make so-called "Momentos," and to organizations like the Symbian Foundation, which is using the platform as a collaboration engine for mobile developers. thisMoment has to compete with the large social networks, other start-up video sharing sites like Motionbox and even Cisco's new Flip Video channels, if it's going to succeed in drawing audience and revenue.
