Nielsen: Online video views, unique visitors, time watching all up in March

Tools

Nielsen Online released its March report Monday on online video viewing in the U.S., showing a 2 percent increase in number of viewers, a 9 percent increase in total streams and a 13 percent increase in time watched per viewer over February. YouTube retained its commanding lead in market share per usual, as it streamed nearly 5.5 billion videos, accounting for 56.6 percent of total video views. Hulu was second in the rankings with 348 million streams, due to Nielsen's treatment of Viacom properties like Nickelodeon and MTV as separate entities.

Yahoo!, Fox Interactive Media, and Nickelodeon rounded out the top five, with 232 million, 207 million, and 196 million video views respectively.

All categories of measurement for online video continue to increase month over month, showing demand has not yet leveled off for the medium. Hulu continued its excellent record, as its 8.8 million unique viewers watched an average of nearly 40 videos each on the site, which bodes well for its continued revenue growth.
