Next New Networks gets the NYT treatment
Next New Networks, which produces original online video series, has bagged some serious publicity with a full write-up of its "mid-tail" channel offerings in the New York Times Magazine. The story's author, Virginia Heffernan, suggests the collection of sites as a reprieve from the boredom that sets in when traditional TV and movies cease to hold the imagination online, drawing a contrast between the often lo-fi, stripped down "mid-tail" content on Next New Networks sites and glossy network TV programming.
Though Next New Networks gets joshed for having "a regressive design" and a home page that's "icky Aquafresh blue," the article does give high marks to some Barely Political sketches and Indy Mogul's mix of weird, partly user-generated content. The article also recognizes the monetization efforts of Next New Networks, and the reported 10 million unique visitors the site receives each month.
