Netgear, a networking equipment manufacturer, launched a new OTT video solution Tuesday that will take on devices like VUDU and Roku and software programs such as Boxee, according to the company. The Digital Entertainer Live (EVA2000) product can deliver up to 720p quality online videos to HDTVs via an HDMI connection and a USB wireless device.

Netgear said the EVA2000 will be able to play YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and other web video content; however, to access Internet video files, users must pay for software loads. The device also can access video files on storage devices and computers via its USB connection.

The EVA2000 joins a crowded fray of over-the-top video options for HDTVs, and there is little to indicate that its price or feature set is any improvement over these other options. Netgear does have an extensive sales channel, as it claims its products are sold in more than 29,000 retail locations and through 41,000 VARs. Perhaps these means of distribution will give Netgear an advantage in the sales race with other devices.
