Move Networks streams 100M hours of HD video in 2008
Move Networks, the American Fork, Utah-based internet television company, said it streamed more than 100 million hours of HD online video content in 2008. It also reported a more than 100 percent year-over-year increase in the number of viewers of online videos it delivered via its adaptive streaming technology, up to 55 million unique visitors in 2008 from 25 million in 2007.
David Rice, Move Network's vice president of marketing, said delivering a quality viewing experience without interruption or lagging is key to developing customers who do more than "snack" on online video content.
"People won't spend significant time viewing your content online unless you provide a really great experience," Rice said. "At Move, our mantra is ‘Quality pays, and quality matters.' Our adaptive streaming technology is the key for us, as it allows us to deliver a high-quality feed to the customer, regardless of their connection speed."
Rice said Move plans to focus on video delivery across platforms in 2009, with mobile video and set-top box technology at the forefront of its efforts. He said that when you provide a TV-like experience to consumers in internet television, they tend to watch the programming like TV, which means higher engagement periods and more advertising exposure. Move hopes to, well, adapt its adaptive streaming technology to deliver its partners' content to all platforms seamlessly, while maintaining high video quality. Move's got its work cut out for it in navigating myriad formats and programming languages to make the technology work, but its ambition could pay off if adaptive streaming brings high quality content to mobile devices and the living room.
