MLB.com drops Microsoft, picks Adobe
MLB.com announced today that it will end its video streaming relationship with Microsoft and move to Adobe systems. Under the MLB's two-year agreement, Adobe will stream all games on MLB.com's popular MLB TV and power all other video content for the site.
Adobe and MLB signed the deal at Adobe's Max conference in San Francisco on Monday. The deal will replace existing Silverlight technology from Microsoft with a downloadable rich internet application built using Adobe's AIR product.
The MLB.com contract is a big win for Adobe, as MLB.com is one of the most successful streaming video subscription services. Since 2003, the site has attracted 1.5 million subscribers and streams more than 2,500 games a season, according to MLB statistics. The MLB's subsidiary company, MLB Advanced Media LP, manages all the video content streamed to the league's 30 teams and their respective home pages.
The Adobe partnership will also allow users to access additional features outside of the web browser while they view the game.
