Mass. court overturns ruling in Akamai-Limelight copyright infringement case

Tools

The long-contested court battle between content delivery networks Akamai and Limelight Networks over alleged patent violation by Limelight took another turn Friday, as the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts granted Limelight's motion for judgment to overturn a previous jury ruling in Akamai's favor. The court ruled that Limelight does not infringe upon U.S. Patent No. 6,108,703, a ruling that obviously cheered Limelight CEO Jeff Lunsford.

"We are pleased the Court granted our motion for reconsideration in this matter and ruled in our favor. We have long maintained that we do not infringe the '703 patent," Lunsford said in a prepared statement. "This ruling affirms that Limelight Networks respects the intellectual property of others, and that our growth and success have been achieved through our own innovation, hard work, and customer-focused operations."

Limelight hopes to reverse expenses of about $66 million saved for potential damages and interest in the case. Akamai plans to appeal the ruling.
