London-based LOVEFiLM has selected Widevine as its preferred vendor of  DRM and video optimization solutions, the company has announced. As a result of its agreement with Widevine, LOVEFiLM customers will now be able to access digital content--including movies and TV episodes--over a broader selection of devices.

LOVEFiLM is Europe's largest subscription service with more than 1.4 million members in the U.K., Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany. In addition to streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet, it also sends DVDs through the mail, ala Netflix.

Widevine says its DRM, adaptive streaming and virtual-DVD like trick play technologies will ensure the video remains both secure and at the best possible quality.

"Our agreement with Widevine signifies our passion for offering high-quality digital content to our members by giving them the widest possible platform choice, value and convenience," said LOVEFiLM's Lesley Mackenzie. "Widevine's impressive DRM knowledge and adaptive streaming solutions are respected industry-wide and they are a great partner to help us continue our rapid growth in this sector."

The Widevine platform is deployed by customers including AT&T, Blockbuster, NBC.com, Deutsche Telekom and Vudu, and more.

Privately held Widevine's investors include Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Charter Ventures, Constellation Ventures, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd (DNP), Liberty Global (NASDAQ: LBTYA), PaceSetter Capital Group, Phoenix Partners, Samsung Ventures America, TELUS (NYSE: TU), and VantagePoint Venture Partners.
