Limelight: Signs point to more live streaming on the Internet

Content delivery network Limelight said in a blog posting that signs increasingly are pointing to operators looking into live streaming of TV content on the Internet as pay-TV providers look harder at IP delivery as an alternative. The CDN said the industry is looking for ways to improve IP multicast in a cable network environment, allowing a single stream of video to serve multiple users online. Over-the-top delivery currently is unicast, where each user gets an individual stream, hogging bandwidth.

Programmers, too, are looking at live streaming options as a way to get their content in front of more eyeballs.

Finally, Limelight pointed to Dish Network, which has been talking to programmers about the potential of streaming their channels on the Internet.
