Number crunchers comScore says the online video industry closed out 2009 with a bang, topping 33 billion video views in December and reaching more than 177 million unique viewers. And, the last month of the year marked the first time a company other than Google recorded 1 billion of more videos served.

As usual, Google scored top marks, owning nearly 40 percent of the online video market and running out some 13.2 billion videos to U.S. Internet users during the month. For the first time, Hulu topped 1 billion videos served for the month, tallying 1.01 billion videos for a 3 percent piece of the market. Microsoft, Fox and Yahoo each were in the 550 million videos served up neighborhood.

Google users watched about 187 videos each during the month, followed by Hulu (22.9), Microsoft (12.6) and Turner Networks (12.0). Hulu viewers watched online video for a total of 2.2 hours.

Some minutia worth noting:

  • 88.5 percent of all U.S. Internet users watched online video
  • The average amount of video watched was 4.1 minutes
