Hong Kong operator offers 1Gbps residential broadband for $26

How far does the U.S. lag in true high-speed broadband connectivity? Consider this: While U.S. operators and tech companies roll out press releases about "someday" offering 1Gbps broadband service to U.S. households (and talk a lot about how cost prohibitive it'll be), Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited has rolled out a symmetric 1Gbps residential service for what amounts to $26 a month.

The company said tremendous adoption of hi-def and interactive multimedia services, including IPTV, has increased the demand for more bandwidth exponentially.

The company said it's using Alcatel-Lucent's GPON platform and its High Leverage Network (the 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User platform) architecture to power the network to a pool of some 1.03 million subscribers. Hong Kong's residential broadband penetration is above 81 percent.
