EdgeCast and Deutsche Telekom form CDN partnership
EdgeCast, a Los Angeles-based global CDN, announced a partnership with Germany's Deutsche Telekom that will leverage the giant telco's backbone network for a joint CDN offering. Edgecast, which specializes in video delivery, will use the partnership to drastically decrease the price of broadband usage in the areas where Deutsche Telekom has a backbone network.
The partnership could mean big things for EdgeCast, especially if it brings its prices down below other offerings focused on European markets. Deutsche Telekom also gains, as it now has a partnership with a firm that specializes in online video delivery. With the European market for online video increasingly dramatically, this could be an important market entry point for the telco.
Akamai is the worldwide leader in CDN services, but several upstart companies and other, more-established CDNs are constantly trying to undercut the leader on price. Partnerships such as this one for EdgeCast are a major step in being competitive with Akamai, which has a substantial global network and several key partnerships that allow its level of customer service and reach.
The deal is similar to one signed by BitGravity, another start-up CDN, and India's Tata communications. That partnership focused on content delivery in Southeast Asia.
