Disney clips headed to YouTube, full-length shows to Hulu
In moves that could drastically alter the content side of the online video industry, Disney has reached major content agreements with Google and Hulu. The Google deal will put short-form online videos from ESPN and ABC on branded YouTube channels, and the Hulu agreement will put long-form content on the site and see Disney take a equal equity stake in the online video portal with News Corp. and NBC-Universal.
Disney will place clips from ESPN, ABC and other Disney properties on YouTube starting in mid-April. Disney and Google will share revenue from advertising, and Disney will control the ad placements. The full-length content deal with Hulu will leverage Disney's lucrative programming and will give Hulu a major marketing infusion, as Disney is likely to give a comparable sum to the $50 million NBC-U and News Corp. invested.
According to the report on paidcontent.org, negotiations for the YouTube-Disney clips deal are complete, while the full-length deal with Hulu is "basically done," according to Business Insider.
