comScore: 5.9B videos viewed in U.S. in Dec.
U.S. online video viewers took in 14.3 billion videos in December, 13 percent more than November, according to comScore Video Metrics. YouTube was responsible for almost half that increase, as 5.9 billion videos were viewed on the site in December.
The rest of the top five after the Google-owned video giant were Fox Interactive Media with 445 million video views, Yahoo! Sites with 330 million, Viacom Digital with 291 million, and Hulu with 241 million.
For the second month in a row, YouTube attracted more than 100 million unique visitors, a truly remarkable audience. It remains to be seen if the site's recent attempts to open up multiple revenue streams from the immense traffic it receives will be effective in 2009. YouTube has begun to add more professional content, following Hulu's success selling ads over long-form, professional material. YouTube also started selling ads on its search pages and negotiated a deal with the William Morris talent agency to produce web-only series for the site.
