Content delivery network providers CDNetworks and Panther Express to merge

It appears that consolidation in the online video space we alluded to has begun. CDNetworks announced Wednesday that it and fellow CDN Panther Express have merged, as CDNetworks will take over Panther's U.S. and European operations.

CDNetworks, based in South Korea, will use New York City-based Panther's geographic footprint to form a stronger total offering. CDNetworks is also well capitalized, which will give the combined entity enough runway to combine and optimize operations.

Former Panther CEO Steve Liddell has been named president of CDNetworks International, and he will manage the combined entity's North American operations. The companies touted the move as one that will expand total reach and capitalize on each company's market strengths. As CDNetworks is based in South Korea, its CDN offering in Asia is robust, which complements Panther's primarily North American customer base and network.

CDNetworks will now have the task of optimizing the two networks to work seamlessly together, which could yield operational savings if redundant equipment can be removed and/or economies of scale can be created. CDNetworks, which announced 300 percent U.S. revenue growth last year, can now accelerate their market move in the U.S. with the Panther merger.
