Boxee gets Brightcove content, but no rev share

Tools

Boxee and Brightcove announced a partnership that will allow Boxee users to stream Brightcove online video content directly to the TV, according to the companies. Content owners now can use the Brightcove platform to make ad-supported, branded channels on Boxee, but Boxee won't see any money from the deal.

While the addition of online videos from Brightcove partners like TheStreet and Conde Nast Digital bolsters Boxee's content offering, if the company can't generate revenue from these partnerships, their value remains vague. Paidcontent.org's Rafat Ali thinks Boxee is "buying into its own hype" and should be attempting to monetize these deals instead of merely "extending its reach."

Audience reach and breadth of content offered are important metrics for over-the-top video companies, but revenue creation should be an even bigger priority.
