Apple TV adds Disney, Vevo, other apps
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) streaming video device, the Apple TV, added apps from Disney (NYSE: DIS), The Weather Channel, the Smithsonian and Vevo this week. Those content suppliers are the latest to come to an Apple platform that earlier this summer welcomed HBO Go and Disney's corporate sibling, Watch ESPN.
The apps from Disney are part of its "TV Everywhere" strategy, according to a report in AllThingsD. That means they are unavailable to Apple TV owners who don't subscribe to a participating pay-TV service. The apps--one for The Disney Channel and another for Disney XD--include live feeds of the traditional linear networks for certain pay-TV subscribers.
The other apps offer a mix of on-demand clips, and in the case of Vevo, a 24/7 linear feed of pre-programmed music videos. Vevo's app is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Poland, Vevo said on its corporate blog.
