Adobe releases Open Source Media Framework

Tools

Adobe Systems Inc. announced Tuesday the first fruits of its long-awaited "Strobe" initiative, as it launched the Open Source Media Framework for development of rich media players and released details on extensive support for the standard. The OSMF can leverage plug-ins for advertising, reporting metrics and content delivery within the Flash-based media player environment, according to the company. True to its open-source roots, the platform also includes an API for the development of additional plug-ins.

Adobe also announced it used code from Akamai's Open Video Player to design the OSMF, in an attempt to allow video producers and content owners to build and deploy quickly online video players that drive content monetization. The companies said in a statement that their combined efforts would help the industry shift toward open standards.

In addition to Akamai, more than 20 other companies have signed up to be part of the OSMF and design plug-in support for their applications and services.
