Adobe announces Strobe partners

Adobe announced more than 20 companies have signed on to support its open framework for building custom media players, codenamed Strobe. Adobe said Strobe, which is slated to be launched in the third quarter free of charge, will help establish an industry standard for media players and thereby make them easier to develop.

A number of online video players voiced their support, including: content delivery networks like Akamai, Limelight Networks, Level 3 and CDNetworks; advertising networks and providers like Adap.tv, Eyewonder, PointRoll and YuMe; and analytics providers like Nielsen, Omniture and Visible Measures, among others.

"By providing all the key components for online video player development, the Strobe framework will drastically save time for media companies who don't want to start the process from scratch," Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager of Dynamic Media at Adobe, said in a statement."The momentum we're seeing with Strobe demonstrates the real need for an open framework that lets these companies focus on developing, delivering and monetizing content rather than on the nuts and bolts of video player development."

Adobe said the Strobe framework would integrate elements of Adobe's Flash Media Server 3.5, including dynamic streaming and progressive downloads. The company said it hopes to pool best practices from its partner group to provide standards-based building blocks for online video developers. Since the company is not charging for the Strobe framework, the move reflects Adobe's efforts to harden the market-leading position of its Flash video technology.
