500 GB of Free Content Delivery; Video Local

Content delivery network (CDN) provider Velocix is offering users up to 500 GB of free content deliver services with no strings attached. The allowance can be used for anything from simple file downloads to video streaming and is equal to 50,000 full-length YouTube video views.

CMO John Dillon says anyone who uses 500 GB with the Velocix Accelerator service is more likely to be converted over to a paying customer with the Velocix Accelerator Pro service. The free initial amount helps cash-strapped start-up efforts put their content on line and gain initial exposure. Accelerator Pro has a 1.5 TB limit and costs $1000 per month; it also provides more sophisticated delivery services such as Flash Streaming or Hybrid-P2P download.

Dillon noted video distribution was breaking down to be a regional and national task, with national broadcasters serving their audiences within a geographic or political boundary. “It’s a different market, a different set of requirements,” he said. “It’s not a traditional CDN [model]… The per gigabyte pricing in the CDN world is an age that is really in the past, it’s not going to scale. National broadcasters are not used to a model where success is significantly driving their costs. As audiences grow, they get more revenue, not more cost.”
