1M iPhone 3G S units sold, user-gen video boom coming?
Apple claims it has sold more than 1 million iPhone 3G S smartphones since the device's launch Friday, creating 1 million more endpoints for online video capture in just three days. The new iPhone, which has been lauded for its video capture ability and its portability, has some analysts suggesting that the device will lead to a large upswing in the amount of video uploaded to user-generated video sites, such as YouTube.
If Apple keeps up this torrid pace of sales of the phone, and other smartphone manufacturers rush to add video capture to compete, the smartphone has the potential to significantly increase the number of online videos uploaded to these sites. User-generated videos, such as the ones shot on the iPhone 3G S, are notoriously hard to monetize, so having another boom in user-generated video uploads could have a negative effect on the sites' attempts to reach profitability.
