The Cable Show last week may have just as well changed its name to "The Online Video Show." It seemed like online video was almost all anyone was talking about on the show floor.
And from the official viewpoint, that appeared to be just fine. NCTA Chairman Michael Powell told Fox News in an interview last Monday from the show floor that the main topic of conversation was the theme of what one can do when they put television and the web together. It was, in his words, "the romance of pleasurable entertainment mixed with the magic of the web."
Cringe-inducing quote aside, the main program's focus on how to blend traditional cable programming with web technologies, including how to bring online video into the fold. Powell felt, as he told FierceCable in a pre-show interview, that online video is still more a complement than a real substitute to cable service. But making online video complementary to cable may be a more difficult task than multichannel video providers (MVPDs) realize.
When almost all people can talk about at a cable convention is online video, it doesn't matter that the MVPDs are telling people that online video is not a threat. By the attention paid to it at the show, and the product announcements and web-geared activities, it's clear that online video is a disruptive element in the market play--one that cable operators desperately want to get control of. Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) online-video sharing platform YouTube made French toast of the France's largest television company, TF1, winning a court ruling that not only excused the company from paying a €141 million (USD 175.47 million) penalty to the broadcaster but made TF1 pay YouTube €80,000 (USD 99,560) for its legal expenses.
It was a rare win for Google/YouTube when the French Tribunal de Grande Instance said that YouTube made an adequate effort to remove programs owned by the French broadcaster and did not need to take any extra steps to make sure those programs did not appear on its site.
It was "a victory for the Internet and for all those who depend on the Web to exchange ideas and information," Christophe Mueller, YouTube's head of partnerships for Southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa told The New York Times. "It upholds the right for user-generated content platforms to innovate, allowing us to do even more to help French artists to reach audiences at home and abroad."
TF1, not surprisingly, disagreed, calling the decision "surprising in many respects" and stating that it is "studying the possibility of appealing the judgment."
While TF1 wanted the court to tell YouTube to filter all content before it's placed to remove copyrighted material the court seemed to think Google's current method of using Content ID to identify copyrighted videos then giving the material's owner the chance to take it down or let YouTube sell advertising against under a revenue sharing arrangement.
Last, a German court ordered Google to install filters on YouTube to prevent uploading of copyright materials. Before that, an Italian court order Google to keep content owned by broadcaster Mediaset off YouTube or face a 250 euros per unauthorized video per day fine.
In the United States, an appeals court has ruled that a Viacom (NYSE: VIA) copyright suit against Google should be heard by a jury.

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday released the roster of its net-neutrality oversight panel, which includes representatives from content creators, Internet service providers and software companies, among other stakeholders.
The new 21-member Open Internet Advisory Committee (OIAC) is tasked with evaluating the effects of the FCC's Open Internet rules, issued in 2010, and providing the commission recommendations for preserving an open Internet, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced in a public notice.
OIAC members include Netflix's (Nasdaq: NFLX) chief product officer, Neil Hunt; Charles Kalmanek, vice president of research at AT&T (NYSE: T); Kevin McElearney, Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) SVP for network engineering; Chip Sharp, director of technology policy and Internet governance at Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO); and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) Chief Technology Officer Marcus Weldon.
The 21-member oversight panel, created by the commission's Open Internet Order, is led by Harvard Law Professor Jonathan Zittrain, co-founder of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. OIAC Vice chairman is David Clark, senior research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
The OIAC will announce its first meeting in the coming months, the FCC said. The commission's Report and Order, Preserving the Open Internet (25 FCC Rcd 17905) took effect in November 2011.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), an accomplished self-promoter, has found yet another way to put his name--and image--in front of a wide audience: online video, and particularly his own YouTube channel.
 |
|
Christie
|
"Christie has removed the media filters, standing nearly alone among politicians in his vigorous use of Internet video, an effective and comfortable home for the Republican," reads a Sunday story in The Record of Hackensack, N.J.
The most recent example of Christie's savvy was a video spoof with Newark Mayor Cory Booker, whom the Republican governor calls a "good Democrat," according to The Record.
The video, which Christie targeted during speeches, got 350,000 hits in one week and that didn't even make it the most popular of his library of 570 videos which have received 4.9 million combined views.
Besides making the governor a TV star, the videos have also allowed him to control his message without those nasty reporters around to ask questions. That, the newspaper said, is something other politicians have noticed.
While video is only one part of the Christie online repertoire--he also does Facebook, Twitter, a photo blog and, of course, the governor's official website--it's the one that's drawing the most mentions because Christie is Christie.
"You have to do things that are punchy and interesting," Republican consultant Rick Wilson was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "Chris Christie staring at the screen and reading a press release would not get views."

A new tech start-up, enRecruit.com, has added yet another requirement to the list of things that a prospective job seeker must do: look good for the camera. Appearance will--and the way a prospect answers some key questions--will go a long way towards getting that much-vaunted in-person interview, the company maintains.
enRecruit.com expects to help cut 60 percent of recruitment costs by eliminating initial telephone and in-person interviews. The service has launched in New York and London.
Rather than meeting face-to-face, at least initially, a recruiter uses the business utility to set up a job specification, create three questions for the candidate and e-mail the package to viable candidates. Candidates then must record a two-minute video with their answers (and no doubt make a case for themselves). That video is then returned online to the recruiter who can both analyze it and send it to yet others in the process for inspection.
"Video responses will replace the way candidates are initially selected for in-person interviews (and) fast time-compress video selection will enable more candidates to be seen," the company said.
On the plus side, the company sees the process as opening the door for more, not fewer, candidates because the recruiter has time to open the process to candidates who might not make it through an initial telephone call or in-person interview.
"enRecruit will transform the way the interview selection is done. Video is here to stay to play this key role in positively shaking up recruitment," said Moira Smith, CEO of privately funded enRecruit.com, a 10-employee firm based in London and New York.

NBCUniversal will combine its multinetwork coverage of the Summer Olympics in London with online streaming of every one of its channels: NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. Of course the streams won't be for everyone; only "authenticated" cable, satellite or telco customers will have access.
Those who get in won't be disappointed, the broadcaster promised, as more than 3,500 total hours of video will be streamed along with the award ceremonies for all 302 medals. Additionally, there will be multiple streams per event so viewers can whimsically--or methodically, if you prefer--switch between different track and field events.
While the network is promising mobile apps, it has not yet said what platforms will be supported, although observers believe that IOS and Android, at the very least, will be on the podium. There is also the backdoor--using a Flash-enabled mobile browser to maybe, perhaps, watch directly on a mobile device. That's about as unclear right now as to what apps will be provided and supported.
When it comes to the Olympics NBC, which is covering the event for the seventh straight time and 13th overall, is leaving no stone--or video conduit--unturned. The network said it has partnered with Panasonic to deliver 242 hours (a piddling sum compared to the streaming numbers but still an impressive number) of tape-delayed 3D coverage.

TV Everywhere services can boast one of the fastest rollouts in TV services history, fueled by the threat of over-the-top (OTT) services, the growth of broadband, consumer adoption of connected devices, and continued increases in online video consumption on all platforms.
Roughly one-third of all broadband households now watch Internet video on a TV or computer, and approximately 25 percent view online video on tablets and mobile devices.
Overall, mobile devices account for one-fourth of the average person's video consumption. Over the past year, the amount of time spent watching video has doubled for tablets and computers and has almost tripled for mobile phones, a trend that will accelerate as the quality and quantity of mobile improve.
The term "TV Everywhere," also known as operator multiscreen or "N-screen" services, describes the delivery of television content, including live and on-demand programming, from a pay-TV provider to connected consumer devices, including computers, tablets, mobile phones, and smart TVs. Read More.
