Netflix is getting good penetration for its streaming video service on the Xbox 360 gaming console. The company said 1 million Xbox 360 users have downloaded and activated the Netflix streaming application on the device. Users have downloaded 1.5 billion minutes of video since the streaming service was announced in Nov. 2008.
Xbox Live users that subscribe to Netflix can stream movies directly to their TVs for no extra fee, and it seems the synergies of the relationship are clearly emerging. Microsoft interests more people in forking over $50 per year for the Xbox Live membership, as it now has more to offer, and a Netflix subscription becomes more valuable without increasing in price.
There are more than 12,000 movies and TV shows available on the direct-to-Xbox streaming service presently, and Neflix is planning to add more content, as it polled its users this week about their willingness to pay $10 more a month to be able to stream HBO content. The one notable absence from Netflix's "Watch Instantly" library is any Sony content, as the rival gaming console manufacturer, who makes the Playstation 3, is blocking all of its content from being used in the Netflix streaming service.
